Once a month, I will feature a woman, historical or modern day, who exemplifies what it means to be an empowered woman in her own unique way. Her story will inspire and guide you as you learn to unearth your own inner Goddess.

Dr. Clemmie Whatley

2009-11-03

I love the love between mothers and daugthers. I think I am especially touched by those relationships because my mother passed away in 1991. As I get older, I am seeing more and more of "Patty" in me every day. Thank God for that! : )

This month's nomination was submitted by our very own Goddess Tamara, aka Tinkerbell. The love and admiration she has for her mother is evident in her sharing. Read on and be inspired. And if you're mother's still around, give her a hug. Tomiko

I'm nominating Dr. Clemmie Whatley because not only is she my incredible mother, she represents the Goddess of Brilliance. She's uber smart and shines her brilliance as she's broken racial barriers in the south. She has moved through her life with ease and grace, while taking on challenges that many of us have only seen, read, or heard about but not fully experienced. Being the first African American female to graduate from the Graduate program of Georgia of Technology in 1973, Mom shined her brilliance while never fitting in. This is remarkable because not only was Georgia Tech a very segregated college, it was also very male dominated whereby Mathematicians and Engineers were mostly men. These doors opened for all women because of my mom and I literally walked through them.

When most people think of math…eyes roll, and noses scrunch…"Why would I need to know math?"…well for many reasons…mathematics is in EVERYTHING we do in our daily lives… And that’s where my mother comes in.

Dr. Clemmie Whatley is not only the epitome of the "SuperMom", she’s a pioneer in mathematics and more specifically, in mathematical education. She inspires and ignites a passion to understand and learn mathematics within children, parents and teachers. Through her company, Educational Dynamix, she teaches innovative ways to learn math incorporating, music, real life experiences, and visual.

More can be found on her website at www.eddynamix.org.

From the rural town of Cave Springs, GA, this little girl blossomed into the most magnificent woman…continuously shining her brilliance everywhere. I’ve been blessed to have such a wonderful role model, and I am so grateful to have Dr. Clemmie Whatley as my mom.

Whohoo! Go Mom!

Love, Princess Tam

Awwww...Tink!
How lovely. I'm inspired by your mom’s story. I hate math and that's an understatement but I am sooo glad to hear women like your mom are making changes in how it is taught to our youth.

Love, love to you both!

Ailia
