Once a month, I will feature a woman, historical or modern day, who exemplifies what it means to be an empowered woman in her own unique way. Her story will inspire and guide you as you learn to unearth your own inner Goddess.
Want to share another empowered woman's story? Please submit your Goddess Spotlight nomination by clicking on the link on this page.
Sandy is a clear example of falling down and getting right back up. She honestly shared her "shortcomings" with no excuses, and found a way to make things right again. Being a goddess doesn't mean that we are immune to mistakes. Being a goddess means that we may lose our way sometimes, but we always find the light. And as she said, it was the "freedom to be" who she was with the Goddesses that gave her the courage to make a change. I hope all of you have that kind of support system in your lives. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Sandy!
Sandy says:I have always been a very private person. I never understood why someone would want to become a celebrity or go on a talk show and share their life with the world. So when I was asked to attend a Goddess Gathering I was hesitant because the last thing I wanted to do was “share” my self with a group of women I didn’t know. Little did I know this group of women would change my entire life.
The Goddess Gathering has allowed me to be open about who I am without worrying
about being judged. Every time I attend a gathering I am asked to freely share a
piece of myself that I have never shared with anyone--even some of my closest friends.
For years I have lived the life of a compulsive spender. Some people overeat, some
choose alcohol or drugs as their escape, but I choose to spend money I don’t have. I
would think I had enough money to buy what I wanted (not needed), but when it came
time to pay my bills the money wasn’t there. I would then borrow money from credit
cards, lines of credit, and my 401K to cover my expenses so no one would know. And I
mean NO ONE--not my husband, not my child and not my best friends.
Two years ago I stood in front of the Goddesses and intended to live an abundant
life free of debt. I began attending Debtors Anonymous (yes, it exists) and have
since been working on living the abundant life I envisioned for myself. In order for you
to become solvent at DA you are asked to share your compulsive behavior with perfect
strangers and at some point in the process your finances are reviewed in order to come
up with a spending plan and release some of the pressures of your debt. Whew! Not an
easy task at all if you have lived in the closet vague and fearful. Thankfully the Goddesses
had allowed me to fearlessly open-up and although it has not been easy I have
come 100% clean with myself, my husband, my son and my three closest friends...and
now with you all.
I still have a long road ahead of me, but the path which leads to the abundant life
I have envisioned for myself has begun to be paved with pretty cobblestone. Thank you
Goddesses for letting me be ME!!

Sandy it is always hard to open up about money issues!!! Lord knows I have my own and just reading your story lets me know I am not alone. Thank you for sharing and I think it's great that you sought out a support group. As much as we like to think we can strap on our Superwomen capes and handle everything we all need help sometimes :)
